SVI Engineering, specialist manufacturer of armoured products, developed a cost-effective, anti-riot solution in the form of a converted single cab Toyota Hilux bakkie. This vehicle meets the requirement of clients needing to carry up to 8 people in hostile environments.
APPLICATION
The anti-riot Hilux provides the security industry a cost-effective option of carrying up to 8 people in areas with a high ballistic threat level. Applications include mining security, moving of guards, extracting people from a dangerous situation and controlling riot action.
This was put to the test as a unit, part of the SVI Secure rental fleet, did duty during the week of unrest in South Africa and it passed with flying colours.
The Hilux solution provides a nimble and reliable alternative compared to large, older-generation armoured personnel carriers at an affordable price.
DESIGN AND CONVERSION DETAILS
The cabin is protected by the SVI B6 Stopgun armouring kit which covers the glass, body and roof surrounding the occupants. This elegant solution provides ballistic protection against 7.62×51 mm assault rifle rounds. A single kit takes around 4 weeks to prepare and installation time is only 3 weeks. A suspension upgrade is provided as standard as part of the cabin armour.
The canopy is manufactured from special armoured steel providing B4+ ballistic protection against AK47 assault rifle fire. The unit bolts to the chassis of the vehicle and provides 6 seats with seatbelts, windows with gun ports, an escape hatch and aircon for convenience. The build time is around 6 weeks.
Run-flat tyre protection can be ordered as an option.
HOMOLOGATION
As the vehicle may exceed the carrying capacity of the donor vehicle, SVI had to homologate the Hilux to ensure it is safe for public road use. This included a brake, side-slope and visibility test at the Gerotek facility to name a few. The vehicle passed the criteria and is homologated to a GVM of 3 499 kg to allow drivers with a standard car license to drive the anti-riot Hilux.
COST AND WARRANTY
The client is welcome to provide their own Hilux single cab bakkie for the conversion process. Pricing includes installation:
- B6 Stopgun cabin armour from R 223,000.00 Ex VAT
- B4+ riot-control canopy from R271,000.00 Ex VAT
The standard SVI warranty on the armour of 1-year/50 000km applies for road use.
